The influence of family position

Analyses of variance and Student-Newman-Keuls post hoc tests were conducted on a variety of dependent measures from the post-observational survey that concerned television program selection processes as they are influenced by family position (father, mother, child). Fathers did not differ from mothers on any of the measures. However, both parents differed from the children on several indices. Children said they were more likely than their parents to watch television programs that they did not select themselves (F=6.31, df=2/283, p<0.01). They were also more likely than mothers or fathers to watch 'television' instead of particular programs (F= 4.57, df=2/283, p<0.05). Children were more likely than their parents to argue about what television shows to watch (F=6.76, df=2/283, p<G.01).

Further, children were less satisfied than their parents with the way their families made decisions, including the selection of television shows, and the outcomes of those decisions (F=24.28, df=2/283, p<0.001). Still, children were more likely than their parents to be satisfied with television as a form of family entertainment (F= 24.18, df=2/283, p<0.001).
